Title: Forum Theme Update
Post by: sk8ace on January 12, 2017, 04:13:29 pm
I switched everyone over to the new forum theme we will be using from now on. I wanted to do this now so we can work out the bugs/suggestions before we switch over more stuff. It will make it easier on us to fix one section at a time.

Let us know what you think and any suggestions you can think of! The last theme was heavily modified and I am sure we will need to do more to this one to make everyone happy.

Man, this new look is completely different. Now I gotta get used to it.

EDIT: I don't know if you purposely added this theme switch feature, but I switched back to the old theme for now.
I found a few bugs like the spoilers, youtube, and changelog buttons looking weird when posting.
Also, signatures on profiles show up as "array".
I couldn't find the "show unread posts since last visit" button either.

I noticed the missing icons for the posting buttons too, I probably have to reinstall them or just update the links.

I did purposely give people the option to switch back to the old one. I can understand it but I won't be supporting the old one anymore.

I noticed the signatures too. I will look into that as well as the Show recent posts button.

It's really not that bad once you find where the same buttons are.

Skater1014 , I added the Recent Unread Posts button to the "S" button at the top right of each page.
Title: This is awesome.

This theme is nice and all but of course, it came flawed. :)
Both the sig and the lack of "Read unseen posts since last visit" at the top of the page are my priority! ;)

Also, im surprised of how mobile-friendly this is. ._.

Ok, I see it now.
I know that you can change avatars but I never knew that you could "Changue" them. (Noticed the typo.)
Also, while previewing this post I noticed that italicized words don't seem to work.

Wow, seems like lots of things broke just by changing the theme.

"Read unseen posts since last visit" is now in your User Menu icon on the top right.

I think signatures will have to be redone, I have no idea where they are stored or why they don't show in your profiles.

I guess the "S" I was seeing is actually your Avatar Picture (Mine was S because I had no avatar and it auto selects the first letter of your username)

So the Recent Unread Posts are in your personal menu at the top right

Fixed. The missing Spoiler/Change Log and YouTube post icons are also fixed.

Looking into why Italics aren't working

Edit: Works now. For whatever reason the code was turning:
Code: [Select]
bbcode [i] into [em]

I tend to agree. I'll make some tweaks to break up some of the white a bit when I get the chance.

Well, when I use the "SMF Default Theme - Curve" and press the reply button to reply, I get this error message:

So this is the problem skatefilter was having... He could've posted in here!

Anyway, im gonna try to post with the other theme to see if mobile works. (I also like the old theme but hey, this one ain't so bad!)

Deadly Premonition EDITor's cut: Checked, even mobile is fucked with this, i thought it was while posting but as soon as i click "Reply", it shows it up. Oh geez..

Should be fixed now. It was a simple misplaced "else" in the code that an old plugin changed or forgot to remove.

This is a problem because in my opinion, the new layout is inferior to the older one.
Here's the list of my gripes:
  • This is a mobile layout. I'm using a computer. Do the math.
  • It doesn't say which threads have new posts since last visit. (bolded because seriously this is the most annoying part of this theme)
  • Barely any separators for content. For example, the only way an user's signature looks different from the main post is that the signature text is a bit smaller and has different indentation. At first glance, I thought Latino Skater decided to end his post with "Roses are red, Violets are blue, Tony Hawk's Pro skater 2" for no reason, but it turns out it's just his signature.
  • The old layout looked better in my opinion.
1. It should be fixed. Try it and let me know.
2. This is the exact reason why I gave the option to continue using the old theme.
3. "It doesn't say which threads have new posts since last visit" As I have said 3 times in this thread, I added that feature back in to the button at the top right side of the screen (on the new theme). Click on your Avatar there and it's the first option.
4. This is the whole reason for doing this now. I made this thread to address little things like the spacing and get them fixed. The old theme is so far from what it was when I first downloaded it. It took me forever to get that one working well enough. This is a process and I am glad for the help. Just hang in there. Those that like the new theme can help to make it better while those that don't can stay with the old.

Not quite fond of the default theme, myself, so I switched back to the original.

I do applaud the default theme for being mobile-friendly, however.

I'm really surprised that so many people don't like the new look. Krad and I think it looks miles better than the old one..

What specific things would you change to make it better for you?
Title: Re: Forum Theme Update
Post by: ENunn on January 14, 2017, 05:36:05 pm
Honestly, I would change it to be less-mobile like on desktop. Looks fine on mobile but I think its inconvenient on desktop.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this, but you can change your theme in your profile settings if you don't like it. Go to profile > account settings > Hover over modify profile > Look and Layout > click change. Then you can change the theme.

What would make it less mobile like? It shows the same info as the old one (I think). Same options and everything else.

It took me about 10 minutes to adjust, but I do prefer the new theme over the old one. It's a little surprising to me that the majority of users here prefer the original theme over the new one, bugs aside.

Trying the new theme again. While I still think it could be a little less simplistic, at least the new colors look more appealing, and the "Quick Reply" button down at the bottom is very convenient. I think I could get used to this over time.

A couple of SUGGESTIONS to make it look a little cleaner, I know it's a lot of work so don't take it the wrong way :)

I think the usernames should be above our avatars like before. The place it's in now is just odd.

I also think the "Upload Approved Full Member" is a little tacky. (I thought the same with the old theme) Maybe some kind of small icon to show who's approved would look a little better if possible?

Like I said I know it's a ton of work, just a few friendly suggestions and I know some may be more possible than others.

But sorry for pointing it out twice, i thought it got buried on the replies.. <_<

Few things i'd like to point out about the new theme (mostly personal annoyances):
- The member list is not horizontally scrollable.
- I can't check the board im posting in by scrolling up. (Because clicking the GPS icon is so much work... Nice logic, me!)
- Double log-in boxes on log-in page!
- Profile pics are squished when phone is sideways.
- Horizontal rules are invisible on posts and preview but visible on Rich editor real-time edit thingy, aka the blue mouse with red outline.

Good heavens...just catching up on the reading...I am shocked at the outcry over a look and feel! Man, please everyone know that the people running this site are VOLUNTEERS and many of them are paying good money out of their pockets to provide us all with a FREE service. Holy crap you would think the world was coming to an end over some changes.

I, personally, think the new theme is 1000*+ more attractive than the old. The old theme looked like something that was created in 1999 towards the beginning of the internet. It vastly needed to be updated. The new one is so much cleaner and attractive. I helped in the theme selection process and knew that there would need to be some adjustments made, and it looks like sk8ace and Krad have been doing just that, I'm happy to make tweaks as well.

Work with us on making tweaks and changes? I think Krad and sk8ace have both proven to want to try and take suggestions and make changes so that everyone is happy, I'm willing to do so as well. Know that not EVERYONE will get EVERYTHING they want, but at least it can get close. Thanks to those who have been kind in their suggestions, it's greatly appreciated. For those that have just offered critiques or expressed frustration or anger, can you at least give some suggestions and not just bitch?

My gosh, the sky is not falling and the world isn't going to explode because the look and feel of the forums changed.

Regardless. We all have seen what a good forum looks like. The amount of wasted space here and simplified look genuinely upsets me. I guess I am being overly critical since I am writing down my ideas for future websites I could potentially make and I have a huge list of what not to do.

Sorry, but the new theme still sucks.

100% subjective. Please don't generalize that "we all" think the old forum looked good. There is no way you can possibly know that. I didn't hate it, but I like this new look better. So "we all" is simply not true.

The amount of wasted space here and simplified look genuinely upsets me.
If you are upset by how things look on a website that is absolutely crazy to me. You seriously are UPSET? There are so many more important things in life to be upset about.

Thanks for crapping on our efforts. Sorry you don't like them. I guess you'll have to look elsewhere for you inspiration for future websites.

Two things I'd like to suggest:
  • For posts that don't have signatures, add some extra spacing underneath the text. If the post is only a single line, then the Applaud button tends to run down into the top of the next post. (at least on my end)
  • For quoted posts, the font size could stand to be a little bigger.
Thanks, and other than these minor complaints, the new theme is looking great! I'm starting to like it a lot more than the original.

The spacing should be fixed. I added a min height for each post which should prevent that from happening.

Upped the quoted text to 14px and the quote header text to 13px

Thanks!

On purpose. I need to adjust some things so the buttons aren't covering text.

Should be fixed.

The upper bar hasn't been showing up for the past 2 days for me.
(I still use the old theme anyway though.)

Also, a recent Firefox update made the login bar tell me that it's not secure.
(Not really too much of an issue but just a heads up that Firefox is claiming that this site isn't secure.)

I removed the black bar. The new theme is made to go with the new site (releasing this weekend). I need to adjust a few things still.

Any site that is not HTTPS with a login will show as not secure. Newer browsers are starting to do this. I think it's just a ploy to get site admins to buy https certs. The forum uses it's own security so it is secure enough.

Now I'm thinking about possibly switching over to the new theme when the new site rolls out since it's supposed to go with it.
And yeah, I had a feeling that the browser was just being overprotective as usual.
