Title: The Controller topic.
Post by: Chatter on September 13, 2016, 09:14:53 am
Hey community!

I wonder what kind of controllers you guys have played TH games with, what your favourite is and if there's any you don't like?
If you remapped buttons or edited keyboard controls, tell us about it! With what controls do you play your TH games?

I played with: N64, GC, Keyboard, PS2 and PS3 controllers.

I like all, but I defenitely enjoy GC most. It's what I used to play with all the time, all 5 TH games on the system (and some non TH games of course).
What I ESPECIALLY like about the GC controller is the control stick, the 8 direction caved plastic. This made it really easy for me to nail specials, frontflips and rolls, for example. on PS controllers it is hard for me with the control stick, so I use it's D-Pad.

The GC controller also felt really smooth for me, fits my hands really well, and I actually like the unusual face button layout.

I never expected keyboard controls to be great for TH games, but surprisingly, I could get used to them pretty well, and they felt pretty natural and controllable, although I still prefer controllers.

Nowadays I play ThugPRO with my PS3 controller, using the D-Pad to control rather than the analog stick.

i had TH1 and 2 on PS1, had TH3 on gamecube, 4 on Xbox, Underground 1, 2, and AW on PS2. so i grew up mostly with the playstation layout.

that being said, im playing Thugpro with a xbox 360 controller. its just what i happened to have on hand at the time, and ive gotten pretty comfortable with it.

has anyone noticed any signifigant wear on your controllers from playing this game? particularly when going after high combos. maybe its just me, but i feel like i get really heavy on my joysticks when playing this.

I played PS 1 and 2 on PC with a keyboard (which was a nightmare), and then all of them up until American Wasteland on Gamecube, which honestly had a v nice controller. Nowdays I play THUGPro using one of those crummy Logitech F310 usb controllers (which surprisingly aren't terrible). I do have a Mock Gamecube usb controller somewhere, but I don't use it cause its cheap and crappy and the triggers aren't pressure sensitive which bugs me to no end.

I started off playing THPS games on a joypad but in the long run keyboard reigns supreme. The keyboard doesn't slip when you're sweaty, you got your fingers on more buttons and you're in 100% control this way! No annoying button slippage, for me keyboard+mouse is godtier controller.

Yeah, in my opinion keyboard and mouse is pretty much the best controller ever. :)

Hey Tomo, how exactly do you play with both Keyboard AND mouse? what do you use your mouse for in TH games?

I agree, it also is cheaper not spending money on a controller! I have a custom mapping for my game and it feels sooo damn nice, it's like, so comfy, no button gets in my way nor is a button too far!
For those who wanna know what it is, here it goes.
Quote from: ShutMeUp's heavenly joyful configs
Up: Arrow up
Down: Arrow down
Left: Arrow left
Right: Arrow right
Grind: W
Flip: A
Grab: D
Ollie: Spacebar
Caveman: R
Alt get off board: Shift
Camera up: S
Camera down: X
Camera left: Z
Camera right: C
Focus or whatever: F
Camera lock: T
Spin right (Or Nollie): E
Spin left (Whatever button it was): Q
Camera toggle: G
Park up: Home
Park down: End
Park left: Insert
Park right: Page down
Some may say it's awkward as fuck, but like this i landed my 78mill! Seems awkward but it's just about getting the hang of it.

And what controls i played so far? Playstation 1 & 2, despite the fact that i played THPS for longer on PS controls, i still prefer keyboard, i can't land 500k on PS2... However, i land way better combos in THUGPro with keyboard, even tho my average score is just around 20mill.....

EDIT: Just corrected a typo.

I've played THUGPRO on my actual GC controller before. There's a driver that allows you to use the official Wii U Gamecube Controller Adapter on PC (https://bitbucket.org/elmassivo/gcn-usb-adapter/overview) & that's what I used when my old PC controller broke last year.
However, the THUGPRO Launcher has issues with the Gamecube Controller driver so I had to use Xpadder.

(I currently use an Afterglow Xbox One controller for THUGPRO.)
EDIT: I just use a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller now.

Yeah, I've looked into the GC adaptor for Wii U and figured it could work on PC, but never got the chance to try. You'd also be missing some buttons like l2, l3 and r3 so it might not be ideal (although the originals were playable just fine)

Anyone remember those dance playmats you could game on?

I have one for GameCube, originally meant for Dance Dance Mario Mix.
I tried playing THUG2 with it, and it worked a little, just limited because it only has D-pad, A, B, Start and Z. I did manage to do a few cool fliptricks, bonelesses, manuals etc. It was pretty funny and felt weird to play, but I really wanted to share this xD. 10/10 would (not?) recommend.

Another note:  Playing THUGpro on my pc (win7), my dualshock 3 controller works, apart from shoulder triggers and right camera stick, and on my Lenovo laptop (win10) everything works on my dualshock 3, except both triggers are treated as 1 button. I used SCPToolkit for both. I'm not interested to fix it, but it's noteworthy and interesting to me.

Damn thats kinda neat. Now that I think about it you could totally make a half decent skateboard controller!!

Now hear me out, because we all know Ride and Shred sucked massively, but what if it was more like the Dance Dance pad in the sense you just had a massive D-pad on one end of the board and a massive face buttons on the other end, so you could just plant your foot on one or two buttons on each end at a time. Sure you wouldn't be able to do massive combos, and steering might suck, but it'd work a hell of a lot better than Ride and Shred ever did.

Tried out my older bro's Switch Pro Controller on PC and it installed and recognized the controller but it wouldn't respond to any inputs. Also tested it on the THUGPRO launcher.

I currently use an Afterglow Xbox One controller for THUGPRO.
It's starting to get stick drift pretty badly.
I used to be able to temporarily fix the problem by recalibrating it but now it still has the issue no matter how much I calibrate it.
I've tried this so many times and even calibrated through Windows. (https://support.pdp.com/hc/en-us/articles/218228118-My-thumbsticks-seem-to-be-drifting-moving-without-me-touching-them-How-can-I-fix-this-)

Keep in mind it's a $50 controller that was 3rd party and I've had it for about 1-2 years. (http://pdp.com/en/afterglow-prismatic-wired-controller-for-xbox-one)
I still have other controllers that I can use as a backup though in case it ever gets to the point where it's completely unusable. (Which is probably gonna happen very soon.)

EDIT: I just use a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller now.

Just a little update about Switch Pro Controller compatibility if anyone wants to know:

I can confirm that the Switch Pro Controller works with THUGPRO. It even has split triggers. The only issue is that there's no rumble support on PC since it uses Directinput via Bluetooth instead of Xinput.
I now own one and I've been using it on PC.
